Quillan is located in the Haute Valley of the Aude departement in the Languedoc region. The area covers a remarkable range of landscapes and natural sites, from the Mediterranean sea to the Pyrenees mountains, from the marine lakes to the Massif Central, from the Lauragais to the Corbières. With beaches, rivers, forests, mountains, plateaus, gorges and caves, there is something for everyone at every season of the year.
The Gorges of Pierre Lys and St Georges are just a few minutes’ drive from Chateau View, the first between Quillan and Axat, and the second just the other side of Axat. As you drive or cycle through, the cliffs tower 700 metres or so above the road, and the river is further below. A bit further afield, the Gorges de Galamus (about a 40 minute drive to the east, on the border of Aude and Pyrenees-Orientales) are also worth a visit.
The Mediterranean (a little over an hour’s drive away) is not the only destination for swimming. The nearby lake at Puivert (15 minutes’ drive) is a good option for swimming. If you go another 15 minutes beyond Puivert, you can reach the much larger Lake Montbel (more than 550 hectares). On the north-west side of the lake, near Leran, there is a beach, with a lifeguard in the summer season, as well as a cafe and the option of renting pedalos. There is also a small lake at Arques (20 minutes from Chateau View), with picnic spots and the option of boat or pedalo hire.
There are plenty of beautiful walks without the need to get in the car at all. Simply cross the bridge and walk either along the river or up to the chateau and beyond. Or walk through Quillan and cross the railway line for more options in the other direction. There are many paths and we have maps of some of the walking trails available to help you on your way.
